We Hate to Say 'I Told You So!'

OK, so maybe we don't hate to say it. In fact, we revel in the ability to say 'I told you so!" in regards to the Wal-Mart line of clothing. First, the hideously ugly Metro7 line they tried to introduce last year before the holidays went flat, and was removed from nearly half the stores it was put in. Then they hired designer Mark Eisen (of the Karoo line sold at Neiman Marcus) to design the George collection that is also apparently a flop.

It may cost only $8.82, but nobody's buying

Sales are so stagnant, that some insiders say that Wal-Mart inventory has jumped more than 10% since the first quarter, in large part due to unsold apparel. This despite Wal-Mart's best intentions and a slew of magazine ads that ran in fashion publications such as Elle:

An ad that failed to sell Wal-Mart's 'upscale' line of clothing

The fall of the Wal-Mart apparel line is funny to us on many levels. First of all, they promised "We're going to rock in apparel," when in reality they rolled instead of rocked. Second, did anyone who loves the kind of clothes they are trying to sell not see this happening?

Most of the clothes sold at Wal-Mart before Metro7 and George were poorly made and worse, fit poorly. Though these clothes may be of higher quality, they still do not fit like well-made clothes should. If you are going to advertise your brand as being "upscale" then you should make them hug a woman's body, not hide it behind shapeless frocks. Perhaps they should stick to being the place that you buy 'grubby' clothes to paint in and leave the stylish clothes to Target.
