White Shoes Before Memorial Day?
Nobody really knows where the old fashion adage of "no white shoes before Memorial Day or after Labor day" really came from. Perhaps wearing white pumps while ankle-deep in dirty sidewalk snow is not a good idea, but neither is getting grass stains on them in the summer, either. Yet somehow, we adhere to this rule, almost like the 'shoes and the handbag must match" adage as well.

Times, they are a-changing! Just look at these celebs, knee-deep (literally!) in one of Spring's biggest trends, the white boot. These are not the small, dark ankle boots that marked fall footwear, but long military-style boots without the buckles that are meant to grab attention. Memorial Day is still a months away but we love these boots! And much like the rule about handbags, we are glad that the boundaries of these long-standing rules are being redefined.

White boots (although not quite knee-high) made the runway at Chanel in Jan '06
Now mind you, we don't want the rules re-written! In fact, we don't think we would like to see these boots in the grey, dreary cold of December. But having them from March on seems perfectly acceptable in certain climes. We don't want the rules changed or eradicated, just blurred enough so that we can push the envelope a little. When pushing the envelope means fierce kicks like this, there is no reason to be a complete slave to archaic rules.
